World War I marks a huge break in Central European Jewish history. Not only had the violent wartime events destroyed Jewish life and especially the living space of the Eastern European Jewish people, but the impacts of war, the geopolitical change and a radicalization of anti-Semitism also led to a crisis of Jewish identity. Furthermore, during the process of national self-discovery and the establishing of new states the societal position of the Jews and their relationship to the state had to be redefined.

The First World War is a turning point in the history of photography as it was the first war to be documented meticulously in photographs. Official military and newspaper photographers, but also ordinary soldiers and civilians, created millions of images recording event, and life, at and behind all the fronts and in the occupied territories. Given the sheer volume of photographic sources, it is surprising how little systematic attention these have received from historians of the war.

22th annual conference of the International Intelligence History Association (IIHA)

Military Intelligence, its knowledge, its sources and subsequent actions play a unique role in conflict and war situations as well as in the development of military strategies, tactics and analyses both in time of peace and war. Military Intelligence Services collect and analyse information, they produce highly relevant intelligence to support the decision process of military commanders and political leaders alike. These services gain their information from a wide range of both human and technical sources, and they are very active in the field of technology development.

This major international conference, organised jointly by the War Studies Department of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Changing Character of War Programme at the University of Oxford, will re-examine the origins, conduct and consequences of the First World War in the Middle East. The voluminous historiography of the conflict remains, however, focused on the European experience of 1914-18.
