Rebuilding West Germany and Its Armed Forces

After the Second World War, the United States invested a large amount of US tax revenues into reconstruction across almost all of Europe. In this context, the successful economic redevelopment induced by the European Recovery Program is still remembered. However, after the foundation of NATO in 1949 the Western European allies sought for more US-aid. Due to the success of the ERP the Eisenhower administration came up with a similar plan to build up the West German armed forces, the so-called "Nash-Commitment".
